Free Parking in Dubai 2026 Guide to Hours, Locations and Rules

Free parking in Dubai is generally available in ordinary public street-parking zones from 10pm to 8am and throughout Sunday. That rule does not cover every car park. Shopping malls, private facilities, multi-storey parking and specially managed areas can have different charges and restrictions.

My starting point would be the sign beside the actual space. Before leaving the car, I would identify the operator, check the hours and work out when I need to return. A destination described as having “free parking” may offer only a limited allowance.

This guide explains the standard schedule, useful mall options, payment methods and the conditions that can turn a free stop into a paid visit.

When Is Free Parking in Dubai Available?

For ordinary public street parking, use this schedule as a starting point:

Day or periodGeneral position
Monday–Saturday, 8am–10pmPaid hours
Nighttime, 10pm–8amUsually free in ordinary public street zones
SundayGenerally free in those public zones
Public holidaysCheck the announced free-parking dates and excluded facilities
Private, mall and multi-storey parkingFollow that facility’s own terms

RTA’s published variable-tariff framework provides the overnight and Sunday free windows. Its implementation dates back to 2025, rather than being a new 2026 policy. Official RTA announcement via Emirates News Agency.

Friday is normally a paid public-parking day. A mall may classify Friday as part of its weekend, but that does not change the street-parking schedule outside it.

For a holiday visit, I would check the parking announcement itself, including the date charging resumes. An employee holiday calendar does not establish the terms of a private car park.

Ramadan arrangements also need their own dated announcement. Do not carry a previous Ramadan’s evening break or midnight closing time into the regular September schedule or the next Ramadan.

Check the Parking Space Before You Leave the Car

I would use this quick check at every unfamiliar location:

  1. Identify the operator. Read the sign or entrance board, rather than assuming every outdoor space uses the same system.
  2. Copy the complete zone code. Include every displayed letter and number when selecting a payment zone.
  3. Check your full stay. An arrival during free hours can extend into chargeable hours.
  4. Read restrictions. Look for reserved spaces, visitor conditions, maximum stays and overnight limits.
  5. Confirm payment if required. Keep the successful session details, with the correct plate and expiry time.

For example, if a sign states that charging begins at 8am, arriving at 7:30am does not make a stay until 10am free. Plan payment for the chargeable part or leave before it starts.

I would also photograph the sign and save the parking location. Those two small steps make it easier to find the car and check the terms later.

Dubai Parking Charges and the 2026 VAT Update

Public parking can use standard or premium tariffs. The regular peak windows are 8am–10am and 4pm–8pm; daytime off-peak periods should not be confused with free parking.

There is also a 2026 change to consider when reading older price tables. Gulf News reported that 5% VAT applies to Parkin services from 1 June 2026, alongside the phase-out of cash payments at meters. Its report covers street parking, parking facilities, permits and subscriptions. 2026 VAT and payment update.

For budgeting, a base charge of AED 4 becomes AED 4.20 with 5% VAT; a base charge of AED 6 becomes AED 6.30. These are tax calculations, not a claim that every zone charges those amounts. If the displayed total already includes VAT, do not add it again.

I would use the amount shown for the selected zone and duration before confirming payment. Event parking can have a separate tariff, particularly around major venues such as Dubai World Trade Centre.

Dubai Malls with Free Parking or Free Hours

Mall parking needs its own comparison because the same day can be a weekday at one venue and a weekend at another.

Dubai Mall Parking

Dubai Mall’s paid-zone fees are deducted through Salik. Its official FAQs say purchase receipts do not extend the free allowance, and an expiry SMS is not provided. Set your own reminder. The Zabeel and Fountain Views facilities are separately listed as complimentary. Dubai Mall parking FAQs.

I would compare the walking route from the parking entrance with my first stop inside the mall. A free space farther away may suit a relaxed visit; a shorter walk may matter more with a stroller, mobility needs or heavy shopping.

Dubai Marina Mall Parking

Parking charges and validation information displayed at Dubai Marina Mall

After the allowance shown above, the published charge is AED 20 per additional hour. Spending AED 250 or more can qualify for free parking after presenting the receipt and vehicle plate at the Ground Floor Guest Services Desk. Reel Cinemas customers can redeem four additional hours at the cinema counter.

The terms prohibit overnight parking, apply charges when re-entering within two hours and allow 20 minutes to exit after payment.

My practical advice is to complete validation before heading back to the car. Having an eligible receipt and having the parking benefit applied are separate steps.

Parking Near Beaches, Parks and Residential Areas

Free beach access does not establish free parking nearby. Decide which entrance you want, then identify the car park serving it. A nearby street, a private lot and a venue’s own parking can operate differently.

For a beach outing, use our Kite Beach guide to plan the visit, then check the parking sign on arrival. For a park visit, our Zabeel Park guide can help you choose the relevant gate before setting your route.

I would not use an unmarked sandy plot or a residential driveway as a free-parking shortcut. The absence of a meter does not confirm that visitors may park there.

Residential access can also depend on permits. RTA’s parking-services page describes an Al Mankhoul residential permit arrangement restricting non-residents in the relevant plots between midnight and 8am. That is a useful reminder that a fee-free period and permission to leave a vehicle are different questions.

How to Pay for Parking in Dubai

RTA’s parking-services page lists SMS to 7275, WhatsApp through +971 58 800 9090, supported RTA apps, Dubai Now and parking machines among its payment channels. Use the instructions for the operator shown at your space.

I would follow these steps:

  1. Select the correct vehicle, including plate code and registration details.
  2. Match the zone to the sign beside the parked car.
  3. Choose the permitted duration and check the displayed total.
  4. Complete payment and inspect the confirmation.
  5. Set a reminder before the session expires.

When using SMS, follow the current format for your plate type. A rental vehicle’s registration may differ from the emirate where you collected it.

If payment fails or no confirmation arrives, check the transaction status and use another supported method if necessary. Sending a message is not, by itself, proof of a valid parking session. I would keep the receipt or confirmation until the visit is complete.

For a metered stop, do not rely on carrying coins alone. Have a supported digital payment method ready before your trip.

Rental Cars, Permits and Longer Visits

Parking with a Rental Car

Before collecting a rental, I would ask how the company handles parking charged through Salik, parking penalties and any administration fees. Request the billing terms in writing so you can distinguish the operator’s charge from the rental company’s fee.

A car-sharing package may include certain parking costs, but coverage and permitted trip-ending locations depend on the provider. Check the actual booking terms rather than assuming that “parking included” covers malls, valet parking or every public zone.

Monthly and Seasonal Parking

A prepaid permit can be worth comparing if you repeatedly use the same eligible zones. It is a paid product, rather than free parking across Dubai.

Before buying, check the covered zones, excluded locations, vehicle rules, validity period and total including VAT. RTA’s seasonal-permit page lists different coverage for its General and Areas categories, with location exclusions. A plan’s name alone is not enough to confirm coverage.

My comparison would be simple: estimate what the eligible visits would cost individually, then compare that amount with the permit price. Leave out free Sundays, days you will not drive and visits outside the permit’s coverage.

Accessible Parking and Park-and-Ride

RTA lists parking permits for People of Determination and senior Emiratis. If you need an accessible bay or an exemption, establish the applicable permit and venue requirements before visiting. Do not assume a foreign permit automatically provides the same benefits.

For a long outing, also compare public transport with driving. If you choose a Metro park-and-ride facility, confirm its transit-use conditions and maximum stay; it should not be treated as unrestricted vehicle storage.

Our Dubai public transport guide explains the wider network. For choosing between transport options during a holiday, use how to travel in Dubai as a tourist.

Common Parking Mistakes I Would Avoid

  • Using the nearest visible sign without checking its area. Confirm it applies to your actual space.
  • Confusing off-peak with free. A lower tariff can still apply during paid hours.
  • Relying on a receipt without validation. Complete the venue’s process before departure.
  • Assuming an exit resets free hours. Check the re-entry condition first.
  • Forgetting the morning restart. An overnight stay can continue into paid hours.
  • Treating free parking as permission to use any bay. Reserved-space and access restrictions still matter.
  • Waiting until the exact deadline to return. Allow time to walk back, load the car and reach the exit.

If you receive an unexpected charge, keep the sign photograph, payment confirmation, entry and exit times, and any validation receipt. Contact the operator named on the notice. With a rental vehicle, ask for the underlying parking record and a separate explanation of administration charges.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is parking free in Dubai today?

It depends on the date, time and parking operator. Check your exact zone and any current holiday notice; the normal Sunday rule does not make every private or mall car park free.

Is Friday parking free in Dubai?

Friday is normally a paid day for ordinary public parking during chargeable hours. A mall’s Friday allowance follows its own policy.

Does free parking mean I can leave my car overnight?

No. Overnight access and maximum-stay conditions are separate from parking charges, so check both before leaving a vehicle until the next morning.

What is the Dubai parking SMS number?

RTA lists 7275 for its public-parking SMS service. Follow the required plate and zone format, and check that you receive a successful confirmation.

Do shopping receipts give extra free parking?

Only where the venue offers a qualifying validation benefit. Check the spending requirement and redemption process before relying on it.

Is a parking subscription useful for a short holiday?

Compare the price with the chargeable visits you actually expect to make. For a short trip with different destinations, zone coverage and unused days can make a subscription less useful.

How I Would Plan Around Free Parking

I would choose the destination first, identify a suitable car park and plan a realistic return time. For a short stop, a free allowance may cover the visit. For a longer outing, I would compare the full parking cost with public transport and include the walking distance in that decision.

The most useful approach to free parking in Dubai is to match your visit to the exact facility’s terms. Check once, save the details and set your reminder before walking away.
